Winter Longing

Lost for words, are we?
No. It's just that
no brew could drown longing,
the one in winter...

It is but a whiff of winter, sure,
yet the longing grows for
the warm rays of a sun
as seasoned as the coffee
made by the first Italian barista,
or as potent as the sun
outside the smoking room
of an Indian cafe.

But it rained outside too,
and when it did once,
and when the leaves turned
greener with envy,
it indeed was a reminder
winters don't last,
but its longing does,
and it freezes it below nought.

The Whining River

In torrential spate
it realised the bunds,
the boundaries,
were not set by its will.
They belong to the contractor
who poured the concrete,
a quick mix,
a quicker fix,
marked the limits,
killed its flow,
and tamed its will,
bounty, reverence notwithstanding.

Well, I'll be damned,
but aren't we all dammed!
And, amidst the cacophony
of an eerily silent night,
we hear ourselves
whine like the winding river...

Humid Hangover

This humid blanket,
the fever it gifts,
is all I can muse on,
and scribble on the wet floor.

The rain stopped last night,
the songs this morning,
and the still air offers a wry smile;
it tells me of today,
yet yanks me into timelessness,
where it shows
in infinite ways, love...
A few drops touch me,
others kiss the leaves
and rusty park benches;
soothing them first,
drowning them later.

Ode to the Monday Rain

Today, if I were to rush,
it would only be till
the window...
To strain for berries,
and then to catch
the tones I missed
in the song that's on loop
since morning.
After all, it is Monday,
a Sabbath for poets.

Monday rains are shy,
selfless creatures of creation;
they talk in whispers,
sing in sighs;
leave us with introverts two,
a background score
that loses to the blues
in our playlists;
the mist, gentle and subdued,
who stays backstage. Always.

If the cold drops were smokers,
or had warm breath like
the kids of Democracy,
they could leave
symbols on my pane.
Footnotes on the music,
their sense, the belonging,
and who bears the bill
for their concert;
I see an empty hall.

A Rainy Day

There,
above those tall, old trees,
and beyond reckoning,
you will find resolution,
answers to those equations
with aspirations of grandeur.

The myth sings,
there is a cloud over there,
born with you, for you.
It keeps your due,
some dew, a poem
and a bit more rain drops.

Those drops you will need,
you would crave,
and chase in uneven spurts,
with ironed out emotions,
for you are seeking solace
to wash it all off when it matters least.

My cloud hovers there, I see,
and it rains here this morning.

Ode to the Lost Rain

These scents don't tickle,
I miss my sense of smell,
numb to petrichor,
I miss its taunt, its poetry.
Spoilt by a big city in a slum,
I hardly hear the Purple Rain.

I watch the shower, still,
gauge the drops,
feel the whiff,
let the mist kiss my soul,
and my memoirs remind me
what it meant to dance in the rain.

It is but life,
laced in moisture,
from tears, both...
of those who are parched,
and those who are drenched in love.
Behold the duality...

... In the scent of the rain,
in its scant disregard
of propriety:
A lout for many,
west and east coast,
while I hear a faint, lost song.

The Immunity Lie

If it rains tomorrow,
will there be reopening
of schools,
and paper boats
to sail across shallow puddles?
But, it is too early,
the summer burns,
and we are left with mangoes
mangled priorities,
a wee bit of sanity,
parched rivers brim with tears
and a strange virus.

Let it rain though,
for it washes away the
salt on our wounded pride.
We still seek vaccine,
solace, air to breathe,
and a new parliament,
as immunity becomes a lie...
The school bell too is a myth,
it rings no more
in this cacophony...
And we sway to
shrill ringtones and eerie sirens.

The Winter Morning Rain

The dark corridor,
which connects the bed near sunset
and the well-lit Christmas tree at Sunrise,
is my library.

The half-read books reek of arrogance,
today they exude the scent of rain,
winter rain,
whose drops tease me
at the window,
urge me to play musical chairs...

If only I was my daughter,
or I were my father,
I would oblige.
I am neither old, nor young,
just perfect to be
trapped amongst dusty books,
uncertain at sunset,
jittery about sunrise.

Rain of Protests

It rains for hours
in Delhi!
The drops, young scholars,
enlighten all with free will;
they join forces,
might above em old men
hurling soggy, blood-stained
papers balls,
The officers call it Section 144.
Sound familiar?

It rains, relentless,
down on anarchy,
carrying vigour from the sea,
free will from the plains
and vision from the hills;
the unified front,
a weather to break barriers
and inhuman statutes.

The storm washes dirt and grime
from the winter leaves,
cleanses the leathered
conscience of existence.

It washes off masks,
reveals the hidden mob
and their savage tone,
but lets the blood stains remain;
to glow in the glare
of those billion flames
lit for a cause beyond
amendments, acts and atrocity.

It rains for hours
in Delhi!

The Rain (From my Office Window)

Words reach out
through the glass pane,
with trembling heart
and shaken resolve
they beg for a dance;
hear ye, raindrops.

They feel the haste,
the receding clouds,
the fading music;
and then, a rainbow
jumps off the million-dollar
skyscraper called hell.

Ode to Longing

I long...
I long to

slip and fall,
walking the tear-washed
green carpet,
sprouted overnight,
through many a
long nights, in fact;
too long,
I long...

To fall...
Run home in the rain,

wiping my tears
and muddy pride,
to the hot brew
in a steel bowl,
it's always steamy,

ready for me
on a cloudy day;
the fall...

I long...
For I am
too sure-footed to fall
in these insignificant puddles;

have too little time to cry,
too much of anger
to fear the stare
from those eyes
that taught me to love;
to LOVE...

Office!

The fading,
smudged end of
a reality I found hanging
above me marks the
start of a reality check
that awaits me.

This hell is bright...
but tricky, sticky,
a quagmire of excel sheets;
where the morning dew mixes
with numbers and dust,
to brew the brown slashes
of bitter slush on my face...
they call it coffee here!

The Monsoon Tune

The drops,
transcends in haste through
the once great divide,
to form strings divine
from the Gods to men,
strummed by a southern breeze.
There you go,
a morning concert,
the great Indian guitar
plays a monsoon tune.

Lager Than Love

Lightning, then thunder,
the cause n effect.
And the rain, later,
sprinkles its sarcastic will
and leaves in haste,
no time to waste on love.

But tonight,
love turned out stinky,
yellow water,
fermented in phosphates,
seasoned n reasoned
in lager beer.

Misty Lips!

Smudges, they shift
with each sigh from
the old artist’s soul,
in between his freezing
brush strokes.
Pure bliss,
his heart creates
the lines which
let life flow
in a sedate pace,
the perfect cadence
to feel heaven,
which plays hide n seek
in an unknown,
wet, yet misty cycle;
The right music
to feel you, in the breeze;
to taste your lips in
the fresh green fern
I kissed...

Shhhhhhh!
Yeah, I kissed...
Ever so gently,
so, so softly;
lest I wake up the
God from his dream.

That Boy in the Rain

Those three storeys,
shadowless today,
project the layers in the
story of that boy in the rain...

A man walks into the
square reserved for morning prayers,
midday chaos and evening jest;
to splash water on his soul,
to forget love,
to tear open his shirt, feel love...

From the heavens;
from the girl of yore; from you;
from the blonde across the table;
over candle-lit dinners;
or at a beach empty.
But, man he can't love!

He can only kneel,
in pain now,
his will slashed in war.
He watches, in dread,
as the boy fades into the mist
rising from a basketball court.

With that, poof, his memories mix,
into a dull grey Molotov cocktail,
then flow into the polluted gut
of a city of rushed dreams.

While two boys live, swinging,
their moment drenched in lust,
a thirst for life, yes lust;
their clocks tick-toeing towards truth,
towards the end of innocence,
where they’ll begin to die!

Drop Zone

I spam you with my sighs,
when my only wish was
to overwhelm your senses
with this rain drop I saved
early morn from the tip of
the youngest leaf of the mango tree;
it still stands tall
near my childhood window.

Are you proud of me old man?
Or do you sigh too,
the "hmmms", for I am
not a kid, not anymore!

It's High Time!

That green cover was
just perfect,
for it leaves my mom glad,
her son has a roof.
My shifting, swaying roof
is loyal to me though,
with random leaks,
it lets me revel in the
blessing from the heavens,
opening me to truths,
the ones I truly belong to,
the ones which cleanse me...

It can keep me in a

happy warp for hours,
watching a ship sail out yonder,
or those two boats which always
struggle to take school kids to
tuitions and then home.
This, the time when
sunsets never charmed me,
its romance never touched me,
as I was gay with the waves
and the digital snaps of ships
I will go home n copy on paper.

Then again this shower

did make me shiver
n run home for a blanket,
a cup of tea too,
which was always kept warm
for I was loved.
But the days vanish,
into thin air, the western winds blow it,
along with the clouds, to the hills.
Beyond my reach,
yes, I dread the climb and
the heights I will reach.

For I'm a man, destined to fall;

the higher I am, the bloodier my death.

Rain Check

"Yes, yes! Right here mama,
I ain't out in the rain!"

The skies opened
to re-christen the birthday boy,
cleansing his veins and lanes
off grime and some crimes;
flushing his soul and sewers
off original and some duplicate sins.

But all I heard, between the quick
baby steps on concrete, was her voice,
which once made sure I played by
the rules written in the mist, in bold italics,
by the waving index finger
I held walking to school.

But I can't lie, can I?

This grey carries my sin,
sprinkled in between
the fresh shoots you planted
while I waited by the window
for my paper boats to dock.

"Yes, yes! Right here mama,

never in the rain, I play with fire now!"

Rain!

And as I look out of my flat window here enjoying its sudden appearance, I hear my mother call. Many times!

Of course she is nowhere near me to call out my name and check whether I am inside the house or busy floating paper boats in the rain.

This used to be a regular call when I was a kid growing up in Kochi where rain is part of life just like the sun.

As a kid, though I was less naughty than I am now, one of my ideas of fun was rain and the inexpensive, low carbon-footprint activities surrounding it -- like sliding in the mud, making water skis with coconut tree branches, netting tadpoles and tiny fish in the small pond at our backyard, and of course miniature boats.

At times even my grown up aunts (mom's sisters) used to join me. Till my mama intervenes, calling out my name, asking me where I am and reminding me that I am not supposed to be outside.

The call stayed with me.

Later, even now as a 30-year-old, whenever I am left in peace to listen to the rain I hear my mother and her voice of concern and caution.

"Leslie, where are u my son, don't go out in the rain."

And I heard her voice today.

But rain is not my worry now mama. It is fire that I have to deal with every day.

I wish the days were as simple as the ones involving monsoon showers and paper boats. But at least I have my mama's voice with me and her beacon guides me to brief yet fulfilling visits to the simplicity of existence I once enjoyed.
